More Shakira showcasing her love for languages.

It has been known that Shakira is interested in world history and frequently studies the history and languages of the countries she visits.

In the summer of 2007 after her Oral Fixation tour, she attended a class in Los Angeles at UCLA, on the History of Western Civilization. She used her middle and last names, Isabel Mebarak, and told the professor she was visiting from Colombia so as to avoid being recognized as a celebrity.

Ingrid Bergman is a Hollywood icon and an international actress with polyglot skills. She has starred in a variety of European and American films and is most recognizable for her work in the movie Casablanca.

Bergman, got her start at the Royal Dramatic Theatre school in Sweden, the same school Greta Garbo received her scholarship. After her studies, she found work in Swedish and German speaking roles in Europe.

David O. Selznick brought Bergman to the Hollywood screen in her first English speaking film, Intermezzo: A Love Story. Soon after she starred in a Warner Bros film, Casablanca, that made her an international star. Four years later, she was awarded an Oscar for her work in George Cukor’s film, Gaslight.

Bergman became a superstar at the age of 29. From then on, she worked with directors David O. Selznick, Albert Hitchcock on three films, and Italian director, Roberto Rossellini, which sparked a scandalous love affair frowned upon during the 1950’s, as both were married to other people at the time.

Her native language is Swedish, her second language is German (from her mother’s side), which she speaks fluently. She also speaks English and French, both languages were learned in school. It wasn’t until she worked with future husband Rosselini that she adapted quickly to the Italian language and culture.

Maria Callas is a Greek soprano and is the most renowned opera singer of the 20th century.

Born in New York, she was raised and received her musical education in Greece and established her successful career in Italy.

Very rare interview footage of Callas speaking Italian to promote her non-musical film, Medea, directed by Pier Pasolini.

It is necessary, especially for Americans, to see other lands and experience other cultures. The American, living in this vast country and able to traverse three thousand miles east to west using the same language, needs to hear languages as they collide in Europe, Africa, and Asia.

A tourist, browsing in a Paris shop, eating in an Italian ristorante, or idling along a Hong Kong street, will encounter three or four languages as she negotiates the buying of a blouse, the paying of a check, or the choosing of a trinket. I do not mean to suggest that simply overhearing a foreign tongue adds to one’s understanding of that language. I do know, however, that being exposed to the existence of other languages increases the perception that the world is populated by people who not only speak differently from oneself but whose cultures and philosophies are other than one’s own.

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

Colin Firth learned Italian to impress then fiancee, Livia Giuggioli’s parents. He said on CNN’s Piers Morgan show, “Her parents warmed up. I mean, taking a stab at their language, you know, I had to do an awful lot to convince them that I was good material for their daughter. Because I had a lot of strikes against me. I was 10 years older nearly, English, didn’t speak the language. Already had a child. I was an actor.”
